Shady Shepherd Tactics: Delivering You From Spirit Spouses

AUDIO VERSION: YouTube  Podbean

Here’s how it works in the world of Christian deliverance ministries.  First, you pick an issue that a ton of humans struggle with.  The juicier the issue is, the better. You want to go for a problem that frequently results in shame, heartache, or embarrassment.  Once you pick the issue, you then go on to the next step: demonize it.  Here’s where you make up some cockamamie story about how anyone who struggles with this issue only struggles with it because they’ve become some pawn of evil forces which are out to get them.  If you’re not an imaginative person, then borrow from the pagans, because they’ve got spiritually terrorizing people down to an art.  Once you’ve come up with a nice horrifying explanation for why people struggle with the issue you’ve picked, then you set up shop on the internet or in a church and you wait for a nice vulnerable victim to come stumbling into your lair.  You want someone who shows signs of being distressed, broken, or traumatized.  The more wounded they are, the more desperate they are, and the more likely they’ll be to believe whatever you tell them.  Here’s where you unleash your horror story on them about how the problems they are telling you about are sure indicators that they are in some great spiritual crisis.  And once you’ve successfully convinced them that they are helplessly locked in the clutches of some super powerful, super evil entity, you magnanimously offer to deliver them.  Isn’t that nice of you? Is the Grim Reaper real?

AUDIO VERSION: YouTube  Podbean

The Grim Reaper is not real.  He is a fictional personification of death.  If we travel around the world, we will find that different cultures and religions have very different theories about how the mechanics of death work.  The truth is that God is the One who kills us by separating our souls from our physical bodies.  Many false beliefs about death preserve the idea that there is some living being who is intentionally killing us, but that being is depicted in many different ways.  Some depict “Death” as an ugly old woman. Some view Death as a walking skeleton.  The Grim Reaper character is often depicted as a robed skeleton who carries a scythe (a tool that is used for harvesting grains).  Sometimes he has wings, sometimes not.  But no matter how he is depicted, he is just a delusion.  Just as we like to pretend that Santa Claus comes and puts packages under the Christmas tree when in reality we know that we put those presents there ourselves, some believe that the Grim Reaper is the one who “reaps” or “harvests” their souls at death.  But in reality, these things are just an avoidance of truth.  The truth is that our three Creators–Yahweh, Jesus and the Holy Spirit–are the only Ones with the power to separate soul from body.   Read more of this post

Spiritual Bondage: Exposing the Scam

AUDIO VERSION: YouTube  Podbean

In an age when deliverance ministries are on the rise and the Church is steeped in an idolatrous obsession with demons, you need to scrub the concept of spiritual bondage out of your theological database. It used to be that when a person spoke of being in bondage, they simply meant they were feeling burdened by some ongoing trial. Maybe there was some addiction or insecurity that they couldn’t shake and it was wearing them down. To be in bondage simply meant struggling with a trial. But in today’s demon worshiping climate, the term spiritual bondage is being used to promote some very dangerous deceptions. Today when people talk about someone being in spiritual bondage, what they’re really talking about is that person’s soul being held hostage by demons. Once you believe that demons can get their grubby little claws on your actual soul, you’re going to become very easy prey for all kinds of vipers in the Church today who want to “deliver you” right into a cesspool of terror and trauma. The Spirit of Jezebel: The Futility of Classifying Demons

AUDIO VERSION: YouTube  Podbean

Because we Christians are so bent on competing with demon worshiping sorcerers, we put a whole lot of time and effort into trying to identify individual demons. It’s a very unrealistic goal, considering how much we don’t know about demons. For example, we have no idea how many of them there are compared to us. We have no idea how they travel around, how they communicate with each other, or how they interact with matter in our world. We’ve never seen them as they actually are—we don’t even know if their real selves are visible to our human eyes. The only time we see them is when they appear to us in costume—intentionally donning some form that they feel would be most effective in luring us in. A pretty looking humanoid with long feathery wings, a creepy looking troll, a black slinking shadow, the ghost of a human child—the costumes are endless. Clearly demons are very skilled at putting on a theatrical show, but how does this help us? If we can’t even identify other humans in costumes, how can we possibly identify demons who are flitting about in creative disguises? Well, maybe form is the wrong focus. Maybe we can start tracking the little rats by the way they behave. Read more of this post

Identifying Demonic Strongholds

AUDIO VERSION: YouTube  Podbean

How do we defeat demonic strongholds? The apostolic-prophetic intercessors, aka prayer warriors, have a lot to stay on this matter. And we should feel inspired to listen after seeing what lofty titles these people give themselves, right?  My, what ego.  And yet a quick cruise through social forums like Facebook reveals that Christians love their titles. It’s always amusing when they let us know they’re not just a prophet, but an overseer of prophets. Ah, yes, going for that extra rank. How impressed we’re not.  Realize that whenever people are busy clinging to self-exalting titles, they’re losing their grip on any real wisdom. What you’ll get from these demon ousting experts is a whole bunch of made up hoopla about how to identify which spirit is behind your particular problem and which specific stronghold you need to aim your poisonous prayer darts at. Understanding Jesus: Do we have authority over demons?

AUDIO VERSION: YouTube  Podbean

“Behold, I have given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you.” (Lk. 10:19)

Here is another one of those tantalizing statements that Jesus said to someone else and yet we just want to reach back in time and claim these words as a promise for ourselves. Today you’ll find many preachers and teachers in the Church who will tell you that Jesus has given YOU the authority to tread on serpents and scorpions and reign over the demonic realm. Today many will teach you that God will keep anything from injuring you—provided that you have enough faith. See they always have to add that last part to make sure they have some way of blaming you when the promise doesn’t hold true. You’ve always got to be the fall guy, because it can’t be God and our false teachers are never going to admit that they’re, well, false. So if you’ve been clinging to this promise and you feel like it’s just failed you in a major way, this post will help. If you haven’t started clinging to these words as some kind of rock solid guarantee from God—good. Keep reading so you’ll learn why you don’t want to go there. Read more of this post

Demons Cannot Control Your Prayers

Demons Cannot Control Your Prayers

AUDIO VERSION: YouTube  Podbean

Can demons control how your soul prays to God?  Can they block your prayers from getting through to Him? Absolutely not. But they will try to make you think they can by scrambling your thoughts. And if you don’t understand the difference between your thoughts and your prayers, you will end up quite distressed. So this is where we need to do some explaining about how prayer actually works. Can demons read our minds?

Can demons read our minds?

AUDIO VERSION: YouTube  Podbean

As comforting as it is to think that demons can’t read our minds, this simply isn’t true. Not only is it not true, but it is a dangerous delusion to cling to, for it leaves us particularly vulnerable to being deceived.

Where do we get the notion that demons can’t read our minds in the first place? We typically assume it as a spin off from Paul’s statement in 1 Corinthians 2:11:

For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God.

Notice that Paul asks “who among men”—not “who among all the spiritual dimensions.” In this passage, Paul is not discussing the ability of demons, he is using the fact that humans can’t read each other’s minds as an analogy for how we can’t read God’s mind, either.  Just as you are the only one who knows all of your own thoughts, so also God knows His own thoughts and the three Members of the Trinity all know Each Other’s thoughts. The Spirit fully understands the mind of Yahweh, and He is able to share parts of that Mind with us—that is Paul’s point in this passage. It has nothing to do with demons. Read more of this post

Are demons stronger in the dark?

Are Demons Stronger in the Dark?

AUDIO VERSION: YouTube  Podbean

Humans were designed to function best in the day, not the night. God didn’t equip us with night vision, instead He gave us eyes that have a difficult time detecting movement in shadows. We feel more vulnerable in the dark because we are. Read more of this post

Selling Your Soul to the Devil

Selling Your Soul to the Devil

AUDIO VERSION: YouTube  Podbean

What does it mean to “sell your soul to the devil”? Is it possible to make bargains or enter into eternal contracts with Satan that we can’t get out of? Can a Christian fall into Satan’s possession by engaging in willful rebellion against God? These are the questions we will answer in this post. Read more of this post
