Spiritual Bondage: Exposing the Scam

In an age when deliverance ministries are on the rise and the Church is steeped in an idolatrous obsession with demons, you need to scrub the concept of spiritual bondage out of your theological database. It used to be that when a person spoke of being in bondage, they simply meant they were feeling burdened by some ongoing trial. Maybe there was some addiction or insecurity that they couldn’t shake and it was wearing them down. To be in bondage simply meant struggling with a trial. But in today’s demon worshiping climate, the term spiritual bondage is being used to promote some very dangerous deceptions. Today when people talk about someone being in spiritual bondage, what they’re really talking about is that person’s soul being held hostage by demons. Once you believe that demons can get their grubby little claws on your actual soul, you’re going to become very easy prey for all kinds of vipers in the Church today who want to “deliver you” right into a cesspool of terror and trauma.

To protect you from the spiritual bondage freakout, we need to get your theology straightened out on a few critical points. The body that you see in a mirror is not the real you–it’s just the physical machine (or earthsuit) that your soul is using to get around in this physical world.  You are your soul.  When you die, your soul will discard your body like an astronaut taking off his spacesuit and tossing it aside. Only your soul will go on to eternity because your soul is the real you.  Both your body and your soul are the property of the God who created them. Now here’s an important thing to understand about God: He doesn’t share His property with others. Sharing toys is something we make our kids do and they dislike it for good reasons.  Once other kids get their hands on your toys, those other kids might be nasty and decide to break your toys.  Then where will you be?

Many teachers in the Church today want you to believe that your soul is a toy that God shares with Satan.  Once Satan gets his hands on your soul, he can do all kinds of nasty things to it.  Some teachers even go so far as to say that Satan can steal your soul out of God’s hands.  Well, no, this is not at all how things work. First of all, God never shares His stuff. Secondly, God is not some blind moron who can be caught off guard by some half speck of a demon.  God is super possessive about His stuff and He’s a total control freak. Whether you are saved or not, God is protectively guarding you 24/7. Nothing ever happens to you in this world without God’s permission, but there are certain things that God never lets happen to you.

Let’s use a metaphor to get an idea of how things really work in the spiritual realm. Imagine that you and God are sitting inside an inner room of your house talking. You are your soul. The house you’re sitting in is your body. Now the room you’re sitting in is strange because it has no doors or windows.  Nothing can come into the room and there’s no way for you to get out.  The room is located in the middle of the house. The house is large and there are many other normal rooms inside of it, but the room you’re in is special because it is sealed off from the rest of the house.

Now all around the outside of the house there’s a very powerful electric fence. Beyond the fence there are a bunch of frustrated demons. The demons really want to attack you, but if they touch the fence, they know they’ll get fried. As long as they can hear the fence humming, they know it’s on, and there’s absolutely nothing they can do but sit around and wait. That fence represents God’s protective shield around you.

Now the fence is always standing, but it’s not always on. Sometimes God turns the juice off for very brief periods of time. As soon as they hear the fence stop humming, the demons rush to climb over it so they can get to your house. Some of the demons are faster climbers than others. God watches the demons climbing the fence, and after a couple make it over the top, He turns the fence on again and all the other demons who are halfway up the fence get blasted backwards by a vicious jolt of electricity. Let’s say God only let two demons get over the fence before He blasted the rest back. Now those two demons come rushing at your house, which represents your body. Where is your soul all of this time? Safe with God inside the secret room of the house. God never leaves you alone in that room. He is always right there with you.

Now when demons reach the outside of your house, they start making a loud ruckus. They beat on the doors and windows with bats. They try to light the thing on fire. Considering how well equipped they are, the whole house ought to be destroyed in seconds, but it’s not. Why not? Because while God is inside of the secret room with you, He’s also watching what the demons are doing and He’s constantly sabotaging them. He makes it so the glass windows don’t break. He snuffs out every match the demons try to light. He makes their metal bats turn into wet noodles. The demons are extremely frustrated, but this is how it is for them every time they try to attack you. God is always messing up their plans. He’s always blocking them from doing what they want to do, which is to destroy your house.

Now sometimes God lets the demons get a little farther. Sometimes He lets them break through a window or door and actually get into your house. When you hear the sounds of demons coming into your house from inside your secret room, you get scared. You scoot closer to God and He pulls you onto His lap and puts His arms around you. But God never leaves the room and He never leaves you alone. He’s always right there with you, saying reassuring things as the demons run through the other parts of your house, throwing furniture, screaming, and trying to do as much damage as they can. But they never get to do what they want to do, because even when He lets them into your house, God keeps right on sabotaging them. They keep tripping over their feet as they run around. When they try to throw things those same things fly right back at them. When God suddenly decides that it’s time for the demons to leave, He blasts them out of the house and they find themselves flying through the air and landing with a hard thud on the outside of that humming electric fence. God puts your house back together, He fixes the broken windows and doors, and then all is calm again. The whole time this was happening, where was your soul? Safe inside that secret room with God. The demons can’t ever get into that room because God has permanently sealed the room off from the rest of the house. You are never alone because God never leaves you.

So if this is how things work, do you need to be afraid of demons attacking your soul? No, because they can’t. The most demons can ever do is mess up your house. But they can’t do anything without God’s permission and God can easily fix anything that demons break. Once you really understand this, what happens to your fear level in life? It starts to drop. Whenever demons attack your house, what’s your best defensive strategy going to be? What should you focus on to try and stay calm in the midst of all the upsetting ruckus? You should focus on you and God together in that secret room. You should focus on the fact that He is right there with you and that He will never leave you. You should focus on how powerful He is and how safe you are in His strong arms. This is how Christian teachers should be teaching you to think in the midst of demonic harassment. They should be encouraging you to focus on God and on truth, because this is what will help your soul. But this is not what Christian teachers tell you to do. Instead, they fill your head with lies and they paint a very different, very terrifying image of how things work.

So now let’s talk about the theory of spiritual bondage and see how those who promote this idea lie to you about the way things really work. According to these folks, you’re in that house again, but this time there is no secret room. God is in the house with you, but He keeps disappearing from view. One minute He’s there, the next minute, you look up and He’s gone. You then start running around the house in a panic trying to find Him, but you can’t. He doesn’t reappear until you start quoting certain Scriptures and praying certain prayers, or until you invite someone over who God always listens to (because He doesn’t always listen to you).

Now let’s look outside the house. The powerful electric fence is gone. Instead all you’ve got are some mediocre motion cameras that alert you when demons try to sneak onto the premises. Demons are always sneaking around, and a lot of times your lousy cameras don’t detect them until it’s too late. This is a real problem, because according to the spiritual bondage folks, it’s entirely on you to hold the demons back. In this scenario, you can’t count on God to faithfully defend you 24/7. Instead, God is like some malfunctioning hologram who keeps fading out of view every time you stop focusing on Scripture. If you want to keep God around, you have to stay focused on reciting the Word.

So when does the spiritual bondage happen? Well, in this scenario, your life is plagued with fear and violence. God is always disappearing on you and demons are always sneaking past your security cameras and getting into your house without you knowing it. You find yourself constantly being assaulted from behind, and whenever the demons leap upon you, they try to wrap you up in thick chains that you can’t get out of. Often they succeed, and when they do, you’re in a state of spiritual bondage.  Once your soul is all bound up in chains with ten demons standing over you laughing at you, it becomes an ugly free for all. The demons can do anything they want to you, and plenty of teachers in the Church today will delight in helping you imagine all kinds of terrifying scenarios about exactly what demons are doing to your soul. Deliverance ministers especially enjoy terrorizing you with all kinds of ravaging imagery. According to these jerks, every problem you’ve got in life comes down to a demon in your house. Deliverance theology puts the demons in control while you are portrayed as the helpless victim who is all bound up in chains on the floor. There are many fancy names for those chains. Generational curses. Soul ties. Soul fragmentation.  Of course none of these things are real, but you don’t know this, and every day pastors, prophets, and intercessors are using your ignorance to their advantage. It’s all about keeping you bound in fear and believing that your hologram God has abandoned you. Once you accept this terrifying image of your soul all bound up in chains, you’ll be so desperate for salvation that you’ll do anything these creeps tell you to do. You’ll pay. You’ll grovel. You’ll let them put their hands all over you and you’ll blindly believe any so-called “insight” that they make up about you because you believe you’re desperate. False shepherds love it when you’re desperate. They love it when you think you need human beings to save you, because then you’ll worship them, and that’s what they’re really after. Worship, money, and the glorious feeling of power—your tormented state creates heaven on earth for the egos of others.

You need to understand that there is no such thing as spiritual bondage. Bondage is about chains and captivity and helplessness. Your soul is never in chains and it is never a captive. Your soul is always inside that secret room with God. God is always talking to your soul, and whenever He speaks, your soul either agrees with Him or rejects Him. When we talk about spiritual rebellion, we’re talking about your soul turning its back on God and choosing to be in some bratty snit. But even when you are rebelling against God, you are still in that room with Him. There is no way for you to get out of that room because the room has no doors. Demons can’t come in, you can’t get out, and God never leaves you.

Even in cases of demon possession, the only part of you that demons gain temporary control over is your body. Whether you are a Christian or not, demons never gain control of your soul. This is why the very popular notion of selling your soul to the devil is an absolute crock, because to really pull this off, your soul would have to find a way out of that room to hand itself over to Satan. But your soul can’t get out of that room. God has set up certain barriers between your soul and other creatures. Your soul can choose to worship demons, but that is an entirely different concept than demons actually getting their hands on your soul. Worship is just a soul attitude. Despite what many idiots in the Church will try to tell you, worshiping demons doesn’t magically create a door in the walls of that secret room. The truth is that there is nothing your soul can do to gain direct access with another human soul or a supernatural creature. Once you understand this, you’ll be able to figure out for yourself if things like astral projection are real. Astral projection is when you mentally “project” your soul out of your physical body and send it flying around the world. Is this really possible to do? No, because your soul can’t get out of that secret room.

There are a boatload of theories in circulation today that all boil down to the same lie: somehow, someway, you can create a door in the walls of that secret room. Some theories say your soul can get out. Other theories say that demons can get in. But as soon as anyone tries to tell you there is some kind of door in the walls of that secret room, you know that you’re being lied to. Don’t put your faith in lies—this is how you end up in a major mess. When we believe in lies, we end up paralyzed with fear, and we help people hurt us.

The truth is that no one can gain access to your soul, yet your soul is what demons and many people want to take down. If you want to hurt someone who you can’t physically touch, your only other option is to try and psych them out. The doctrine of spiritual bondage is just a nasty way of trying to psych your soul out. If false teachers, false prophets, and these pompous fools who go around calling themselves powerful intercessors can convince your soul to accept certain lies, then they can gain all kinds of power over you. But it will be a power that you gave them, and you can take that power back again by unlearning the lies that they have taught you.

The truth is that your soul is safe with God, and as long as you are on this earth, God will never leave you. Whether you are a Christian or not, God’s protection of your soul is constant. No soul is ever thrown into the clutches of demons like so much dog meat. All souls are the property of God, and God never gives anyone else the rights to His stuff. So when demons tell you that you’re hopelessly caught in their stronghold, they are lying to you. When men and women with holy sounding titles try to tell you that God has ditched you and you now need their help to bring Him back, they are lying to you. When demons tell you that they have taken possession of your soul or that they are blocking your soul’s communication with God, they are lying to you. It’s only you and God in that secret room, and no one can ever come between you and Him.

If you want to get into a right relationship with God and obtain salvation, no one can stop you. Salvation is not about God suddenly getting involved in your life, because God is already intimately involved in every aspect of your life. Salvation is when God changes His attitude towards you and decides to eternally adopt you as His child.

Damnation is not about God handing you over to Satan because God will never hand you over to Satan or anyone else. Hell is God’s creation and He is the One who torments the souls that He throws into it. Your soul ends up in Hell when it spends all of its time on earth intentionally giving God the cold shoulder and refusing to sincerely submit to His Authority. Demons can’t force you into Hell. Demons don’t run Hell, and they aren’t currently flitting in and out of it. Hell is an inescapable prison, and once God throws demons into it, they will be just as helpless as all of the other creatures who are currently stuck there.

God’s truth is like a powerful, life-changing force that sets our souls free from all kinds of fear. When we align with God’s truth, our souls end up joyfully basking with Him in oceans of hope, peace, and freedom.  When we put our faith in lies, we end up feeling beat down, fearful, and hopeless.  Ask God to teach you His truth and to help you unlearn all of the lies that you’ve been taught.
